Bad Breath or technically termed as Halitosis is a term used to describe noticeably unpleasant odors exhaled in breathing. Bad Breath is estimated to be the third most frequent reason for seeking dental aid & care, following tooth decay and periodontal disease.
In most cases (85–90%), bad breath originates in the mouth itself. The intensity of bad breath can differ during the day, due to eating certain foods (such as garlic & onions) obesity, smoking, and alcohol consumption. Since the mouth is exposed to less oxygen and is inactive during the night, the odor is usually worse upon awakening which can cause “morning breath”. Chronic bad breath, which is a more serious condition, affects some 25% of the population in varying degrees.
Treatment for bad breath can vary, depending on the cause. If your bad breath is found to be caused by an underlying health condition, your dentist will likely attempt to help you better control that condition. Other dental measures may include certain mouthwashes and toothpastes or treatment of dental disease.
You can improve or prevent bad breath by doing the following:
- Brush your teeth after you eat, at least twice a day. Toothpaste has been shown to reduce bad breath odors for up to 12 hours.
- Floss at least once a day. Proper flossing removes food particles and plaque from between your teeth.
- If you wear a bridge or dentures, clean them regularly.
- Brush your tongue to get rid of bacteria.
- Drink plenty of water. To keep your mouth moist.
- Change your toothbrush every three to four months, and choose a soft-bristled toothbrush.
- Last and but not least, schedule regular dental checkups at least twice a year for professional cleanings.
