Chewing Gum Varieties

Chewing gums come in a variety of flavors, shapes and sizes. There is no standard type of gum, but most commonly it comes in a small stick or wad. Chewing gum is basically made by combining a water-insoluble phase with a water-soluble phase of sweeteners, flavoring and food coloring. Spearmint and peppermint are the most popular flavors of chewing gum today.

Some of the most regular types of chewing gums include:

Bubble gum – Used for blowing bubbles because of film-forming characteristics.
Sugar-free gum
– Instead of sugar, sugar-free gum has artificial sweeteners to provide the taste.
Ball gum
– This gum is shaped like a ball. It is one of the most popular chewing gums.
Center-filled gum
– Center-filled gum in the center has a soft mass, usually filled with some tasty liquid.
Stick gum
-  Stick gum is a thin, flat, slab of gum usually in rectangular shape.

Chewing gum itself does contribute to plaque reduction, and some studies have shown beneficial effects on oral hygiene from chewing gum. In addition to this, there is an increasing body of evidence emerging that chewing of sugar-free gum, which was first introduced in the 50s can remineralize the tooth surface and help prevent cavities.
