Crowns and Bridges
Dental crowns are used to restore a tooth with substantial damage from decay or fracture, or a tooth that will no longer support a traditional filling. A crown is typically an effective solution that feels comfortable in our patients’ mouths, while allowing our dentists to preserve the natural tooth.
As a common general dentistry procedure, crowns are permanent dental prosthetics that cover the affected tooth above the gum line, concealing the damage completely. There are three main types of crowns used by our dentists, as follows:
- Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns
- All metal, or gold crowns
- 100% ceramic crowns
The specific type of dental crown used depends on each patient’s situation and the desired results. Typical factors that affect the type of crown depend on the position and condition of the tooth and any existing restorations already in place, as well as the general strength of the surrounding teeth. The dentists at Gentle Dental will address each individual case, and then thoroughly discuss their assessment with regards to overall comfort, function, and the aesthetic appearance to help each patient develop appropriate expectations for their general dentistry procedure.
A bridge is comprised of multiple prosthetic teeth, and allows our dentists to restore one of more missing teeth permanently. After the dentists prepare our patients’ existing teeth to accept the bridge, it will be connected to the remaining teeth. If necessary, one or more dental implants will be surgically placed in the patient’s mouth to further support the bridges and additional general dentistry procedures that may be required in the future.
Dental Implants
One of the most popular procedures of specialty and reconstructive dentistry is dental implants. Whether a patient is in need of a single tooth replacement, or a full-mouth rehabilitation, dental implants provide a safe, effective, permanent fix for missing teeth.
Dental implants are surgically placed by our oral surgeons or periodontists. The surgical screw replaces the original root of the lost or extracted tooth, and provides a permanent holding place for the special crown. Once the bone heals around the implant, our West Palm Beach general dentists places the porcelain tooth over the implant, providing our patients with results that can last a lifetime.
When a patient loses most or all of their teeth, a number of implants may be placed to secure a bridge or removable denture to ensure the teeth will remain in place. With dental implants, our patients can eat and smile with confidence, knowing the tooth, bridge, or denture will not fall out.
Periodontal Care
Periodontal or gum disease affects millions of Americans, and left untreated often leads to more serious dental issues such as future tooth loss. Since the gums are the foundation of our patients’ teeth, treating periodontal disease and maintaining healthy oral habits are a vital priority that our dentists remain extremely dedicated to.
Periodontal disease not only affects our patients’ oral health, but can also elevate the risk of stroke and heart disease. As one of the most important things our patients can do to support their oral health, our West Palm Beach periodontists encourage routine check-ups and complete periodontal exams.
There is no cure for gum disease, which means periodontal therapy with the Gentle Dental periodontist and our highly trained dental hygienists is extremely important. At-home care and maintenance of healthy teeth and gums is especially important, but certain procedures that further support the health of our patients’ gums can only be performed in our dental offices, such as scaling, root planing, and Arrestin ™ antimicrobial antibiotics.
Root Canals (Endodontics)
Endodontics or root canal treatment is a procedure designed to save our patient’s teeth by removing necrotic nerve, blood vessels, and bacteria in the pulp of the teeth. Root canal therapy is very effective in saving teeth, even when badly infected and severely broken down. While simple root canals may be performed by our West Palm Beach general dentists, more complex root canal procedures are typically performed in-office by our endodontists to further enhance the comfort and overall satisfaction for our patients.
Teeth Extractions
Dental extractions are performed for a variety of reasons, including tooth decay or injury, the surfacing of problematic wisdom teeth, or the need to make room for orthodontic procedures. Many dental extractions are performed in conjunction with other general, cosmetic, or restorative procedures by our highly trained dental professionals.
TMJ Treatment
The chronic migraine headaches and neck tension associated with TMJ can be caused by grinding or clenching of the teeth, as well as an awkward shape, position, or movement of the jaw muscles. FDA approved treatment known as the NTI appliance is now available, and does not require medicine or surgery to correct the painful symptoms associated with TMJ.
Dentures
Recent advancements in general dentistry have improved the overall look and feel of dentures. Despite this increasingly natural look and feel however, the dentures may still feel strange at first.
Dentures are prosthetic teeth that allow our dentists at Gentle Dental to replace missing teeth, and can be used for partial or complete dental restorations. Each individual case requires a comprehensive general dentistry exam, and assessment of the overall need for the reconstructive procedure, as well as constant monitoring at first to ensure the correct fit is achieved.
Cosmetic Dentures
Cosmetic dentures allow our dentists to address any aesthetic concerns our patients may have stemming from missing teeth. Whether a partial or complete cosmetic denture is required, recent advancements in cosmetic dentistry have enabled the dentists at our West Palm Beach office to create more natural, comfortable dentures.
Cosmetic dentures are made of prosthetic teeth, and can be custom fit to match any patients’ cosmetic dentistry needs. The Gentle Dental Group is also able to make specific adjustments to account for the changes in our mouths over time and ensure the cosmetic dentures stay in place.
Removable Partial Dentures
Removable partial dentures provide an alternative option for those patients hoping to avoid the need for complete dentures or dental implants. Cosmetically, the partial dentures look very similar to natural teeth, and are comprised of strong, comfortable material. They are commonly held together with a plastic and metal structure, and attached to the patient’s remaining teeth.
