So your dentures are now clean but how do you get them white? You will want to soak them for at least thirty minutes and up to the next day in a mixture of half water and half hydrogen peroxide 3%. Brush them thoroughly (and your mouth if you prefer) with your favorite toothpaste before re-inserting.

If you still have stubborn stains you can soak your dentures in a mixture of bleach and water. Once again use a glass bowl. Mix one third cup bleach with one cup water. Make sure that the mixture covers your dentures, especially the part that is stained. Soak them for at least one half hour or overnight if you can. After you remove them from the mixture, rinse them for at least two minutes under a running faucet. Brush them thoroughly with a toothbrush and your favorite toothpaste.

If you have excess plaque buildup, experts recommend switching to the electric toothbrush, which is more efficient in removing debris from in between the teeth. An electric toothbrush is able to cleanse the more thoroughly within a shorter time than the regular manual brush.

People with limited hand dexterity, should also choose the electric brush as it helps getting to hard to reach areas. There isn’t a big difference between the vibrating and the rotating head brushes. They usually perform the same job, only in different ways.

While it is extremely important to brush your teeth for at least twice a day for at least two minutes  you should also pay attention to brushing for the same amount of time each quadrant of the mouth. Just because one side of the mouth is clean doesn’t mean the other side necessarily is.

Dental Plaque Bacteria Can Lead To Blood Clots

Endocarditis is the term referred to as inflammation of the heart’s lining. This type of inflammation can be caused by dental plaque bacteria and if not treated can be life threatening. The bacteria can also lead to blood clots when it enters the bloodstream.

Plaque-bacteriaResearchers have discovered that the plaque bacteria is able to produce a molecule on its surface that lets it mimic the human protein fibrinogen – a blood-clotting factor. When this occurs platelets in the body is activated causing them to clump inside blood vessels. These unwanted blood clots encase the bacteria, protecting them from the immune system and from antibiotics that might be used to treat infection. This unnecessary platelet clumping can though lead to growths on the heart valves (endocarditis), or inflammation of blood vessels that can block the blood supply to the heart or brain.

This potentially very serious condition all started from some plaque on the teeths surface. To avoid all these issues it is very important to take proper care of your mouth and gums at all times. That includes brushing regularly, flossing and making regular visits to your local Gentle Dental office for checkups and cleanings. To make an appointment call 1-888-513-7436.

Poor Dental Care Can Get You Sick!

Posted on: No Comments

Flossing and brushing your teeth on a regular basis may not only benefit your teeth but your overall body health. Not only can bacteria in your mouth caused by lack of teeth brushing and flossing lead to periodontitis (gum disease) and bad breath but it can lead to serious health problems.

Gum Disease, for example can impact your heart. People with periodontitis are twice as likely to get coronary artery disease. Bacteria spreads in the bloodstream to the heart and causes clots which can than trigger a heart attack. Research also suggests that people with poor oral health have an increased risk of dementia, or memory loss. Oral bacteria has the ability to spread to the brain through cranial nerves that connect to the jaw or through the bloodstream.

These are just two of the many issues that can come from poor oral health.  Other areas that are affected from lack of dental care include a higher risk of diabetes and respiratory infections. Women with teeth and mouth issues may also have a harder time getting pregnant.

Generally you know you are in good oral health if your gums don’t bleed and you don’t have any sharp pain to your teeth. You should also have good breath for at least a few hours after you eat breakfast in the morning. If you have any of these symptoms there is a chance you have some oral health problems and should see your Gentle Dental dentist.  You also want to make sure you floss before you brush your teeth and use a soft or extra soft bristle tooth brush. If you have any questions and to make an appointment with your local Gentle Dental call 1-888-513-7436.

Mints Keep Breath’s Fresh

Posted on:

Did you know that the first breath mint marketed in the United States were Certs in 56. Before than, candy was not associated with oral hygiene and since than there has been a variety of different breath mints that have come out and helped keep our breath nice and fresh.  Here are some of the biggest name mints and how they came about. certs

Certs were first introduced in 56 by the American Chicle Co. after the success of Clorets gum. Containing a breathe freshener called Retsyn, Certs grew to prominence in the 60s and 70s. The circular mint comes in a rolled package and includes wintergreen and spearmint flavors.

Tic Tacs, the pill-like mints, were introduced in 69. Freshmint was the first flavor featured in the signature clear box with a flip top. Other flavors include cinnamon, powermint and wintergreen.

Altoids were first introduced the U.K. as a relief for stomachaches in 1790. The signature Altoids tin container debuted in the 20s. First sold in the U.S. in 18, Altoids has now evolved into a top-selling mint with flavors such as original peppermint and wintergreen.

The Lifesaver company released Breathsavers in 78 in a similar roll package to Certs. In 98, Breathsavers hosted the longest kiss contest. The winners kissed for 29 hours. Round and disk-like, flavors include peppermint and citrus mist.

Mints are a great supplement for keeping good breath but they aren’t a substitute for regularly brushing your teeth and making regular dental cleaning checkups at your local Gentle Dental office. To make an appointment call 1-888-513-7436.
