Tooth Sealants are Effective for Adults

Tooth sealants have always been known in preventing dental decay in children’s temporary teeth under the age of ten. Well, new research has found and suggested that these same dental sealants are extremely effective for adults as well. tooth sealants for adults

In the study 52 adults, who had in total as many as 72 decayed molar teeth were given by dentists tooth sealants on as many as 60 of the decayed teeth. The remaining 12 teeth have been treated with the traditional drilling and filling method. The purpose of the research was to find out if the sealants are efficient in the case of adult teeth. The study revealed many important points including:

- A few people dropped out in the beginning of the study.
- Out of the eventual 49 sealants examined, 39 were intact.
– Only 7 sealants needed to be replaced or repaired, because they did not form good adhesion onto the surface of the tooth.
– There were 3 sealants that needed to be replaced with the traditional filling treatment, mainly because researchers found that the decay has been continuing to grow under the sealant.

The researchers and dentists concluded that adult dental decay could be treated efficiently with dental sealants instead of the standard filling treatment. Sore Teeth After Fillings

If you ever had a cavity filled there is a high probability you may have felt some soreness after you left the dentist chair. This is because decay irritates the teeth and when it is being worked on it can get irritated even further. This irritation and soreness usually will go away with time as the tooth heels.

Sometimes though the pain after a filling doesn’t go away with time and can be triggered through a number of reasons:

sore toothA tooth has four parts namely dentin, pulp, enamel and cementum. The dentin is permeable and extends on all sides of the pulp. If the tooth decay is closer to the dental pulp, some bacteria could be present in the dentin. Because of the porous nature of the dentin, the bacteria may spread from the dentin to the filling and the tooth. This bacteria causes tooth infection which leads to sensitivity.

An inflamed dental pulp is another reason for sensitivity. Dental pulp is a component of the tooth, made up of living soft tissue and certain cells. Sometimes a cavity may cause inflammation of the pulp and this inflammation may not go away even after the cavity filling procedure. This could lead to deterioration of the teeth and thus cause sensitive teeth after a cavity filling.

Replacing Those Old Metal Fillings

Have you ever been right in the middle of smiling, only to stop yourself because you were embarrassed about your teeth. A lot of people have silver colored fillings, which are also known as “amalgam” fillings. These fillings stand out against the white color of your teeth, especially if you have a lot of the metallic fillings in your mouth. Gentle Dental dentists can help with that problem by replacing metal fillings with a more natural look.

Composite fillings, which are also known as “white fillings”  are attractive and durable, and they blend in with your teeth so that they are virtually undetectable. These types of fillings, also known as bondings are also healthier as they are mercury-free. metal fillings
