Dental Appliances Can Cause Bad Breath

Did you know there are approximately 3 million people in America and Canada that wear dental braces and twice as many who wear mouth guards and retainers? That doesn’t include the millions of people that wear dentures. With those types of numbers there are likely millions of people that struggle with bad breath or Halitosis. chronic_bad_breath

Halitosis or bad breath can definitely be caused by all these types of dental appliances. The bacteria in the human mouth find themselves more free surfaces where they can reside, if a patient wears any kind of dental appliance, be it a mouth guard, braces or a denture. Food particles can then get trapped by these devices allowing microbes to feed on these particles which leads to bad breath.

Oral appliances are very important for your oral health, and people should not restrain from wearing them just because they feel their breath will stink by wearing them.  There are plenty of breath freshening products available on the market that can help neutralize the bacteria, and keep away the formation of Halitosis. Speak to your local Gentle Dental dentist or orthodontist by calling 1-888-513-7436 to learn about which product will work best for you and your family.

Ways To Straighten Teeth Without Braces

Most of the time when teeth are crooked traditional braces are the most logical option. There are though other alternatives for those looking to straighten and fix teeth without typical orthodontics.

One method to fix teeth without braces is Invisalign. This innovative system uses a series of retainer-type mouthpieces which will shape your teeth. Usually, Invisalign results can be seen in a year’s time. This method works best for those who have minor teeth misalignment only. Invisalign-facetoface

Another method to fix crooked teeth is to have veneers applied to your teeth. Veneers will instantly give you a perfect smile minus all the pain of actual teeth straightening. They can be made out of porcelain or of composite material.

Cosmetic contouring is another route to take to straighten teeth, especially if it is a problem with overcrowding. The process is pain-free and involves a series of procedures that focuses on reshaping your teeth. This type of technique works on the top teeth only. There are also a lot of drawbacks to this method but it is still a viable option aside from braces.

Each one of these alternatives has its own set of advantages and disadvantages.  It would be a good idea to speak to your Gentle Dental Dentist to see which type is best for you and your family. To make an appointment call 1-888-513-7436.

Jaw Size Linked To Diet

Posted on:

According to research from a major university the cause of many common orthodontic problems by people in industrialized nations are due to their soft modern diet which than causes the jaw to grow too short and small relative to the size of their teeth.

In the study the university compared the shape of the cranium (skull) and mandible (lower jaw) in 11 globally distributed populations against models of genetic, geographic, climatic and dietary differences. They found that lower jaw shape, and to some extent the shape of the upper palate, was related to the dietary behavior of populations, while the cranium was strongly related to the genetic relationships of the populations.

In particular, the lower jaw is reflected by if the populations are primarily hunter-gatherers (meat eaters) or agriculturalist in nature (fruit and vegetable eaters). This therefore suggests that chewing behavior causes the lower jaw to grow and develop specifically in areas how food consumption is eaten, while the skull is not affected in the same way. jaw bone

Overall, the meat eater groups had longer and narrower mandible, indicating more room for the teeth to erupt correctly, while the vegetarians had generally shorter and broader mandibles, increasing the likelihood of dental crowding.

The most interesting part of this study is that the rest of the skull is not affected in the same way as the jaw and that the skull more closely matches genetics.
