Taking Your Toddler To The Dentist

Taking a toddler to the dentist for the first time can be a very challenging experience. It is something very new to them and you will most likely get some resentment especially once you get to the location. Here is a way to overcome that fear and make the experience more tolerable and enjoyable for all of you:

First explain why you are going in the first place. Sit them down and let them know that the dentist is a nice man/lady who was going to look at their teeth to make sure they were all okay. Let them know that the dentist is going to need to open their mouth and ask them to bite together and that they might touch their teeth. As a parent you may want to demonstrate beforehand to get them prepared. ToddlerDentalCare

After you prepped your toddler and did a “dry run” with them of how their experience is going to go, leave the rest to your dentist and the dental staff. At Gentle Dental we will take care of your toddler as if they were our own. With 10 pediatric specialty offices throughout South Florida there is always an office nearby.

Each Gentle Dental team creates a positive, fun atmosphere to allay any fear and anxiety toddlers may have about the dentist. We offer the latest treatments to keep their teeth and gums healthy to prevent problems in the future. We will also emphasize strong dental education for both parents and toddlers including teaching healthy hygiene habits.

To make an appointment for your toddler in one of our state-of-the-art pediatric facilities throughout South Florida call 1-888-513-7436.

Children and Tooth Decay

Tooth decay in kids as young as 2 are becoming more and more common. Dentists are regularly seeing preschoolers with up to ten cavities at a time!  The problem is becoming so severe, that many kids are requiring general anesthesia because young children are unlikely to sit through such extensive procedures while they are awake. Study’s have shown that over 50% of children will have some type of tooth decay by the age of 5 and that oral infection is the number one chronic disease in kids.

There are a variety of reasons for why this is happening. One very obvious reason is endless snacking kids endure. They are also drinking sugary type drinks such as juices and other sweet drinks. Another reason for the high amount of cavities is many parents are giving their children bottled water rather than fluoridated tap water which is essential for overall oral health, especially for children.

Many infants should visit a dentist by the age of 1 to be assessed for future cavities even if they only have a few teeth that have grown in. This way parents can be be forewarned and educated before it becomes a problem. Other ways to combat this tooth decay problem is for kids to get into a habit at a young age to be brushing their teeth twice a day. Cutting back on the sweets and other foods and drinks that contain large amounts of sugar is another way to combat the problem.

Gentle Dental has 10 pediatric specialty offices throughout South Florida that are specifically capable for all children’s oral health needs. To learn more and to make an appointment call 1-888-513-7436.

“Green” Best Dental Practices To Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day

With this past Saturday, being St. Patrick’s Day we thought it would be good to highlight some popular “Green” best practices that can help keep your teeth and mouth healthy.

Flossing is a very important part of your oral health. To get the perfect floss start with about 18 inches of it from its container. Wind floss loosely around your fingers, holding tightly between your thumb and forefinger. Rub floss gently up and down against each side of each tooth, being sure to reach under the gum line. As for the “Green” factor try flossing with the wintergreen flavor that many manufacturers produce. It tastes great and provides your mouth with great breath! Green Tooth Man

Mouthwash in another very important aspect of oral health but there are many different types to choose from depending on what you are trying to achieve. Fluoride mouth rinses are used to reduce and prevent tooth decay.  Studies have shown that fluoride mouthwashes add extra protection against tooth decay! Antimicrobial mouthwash is also a popular choice because it reduces the amount of bacteria in your mouth. It can even inhibit the growth of gingivitis-causing plaque! No matter which type of mouthwash you decide on, to celebrate St. Patty’s pick out a “Green” flavor such as mint flavor.

St. Patty’s Day can be fun for everyone even if you aren’t Irish. Why not take the celebrating to a dental level by adding  “Green” products to your oral health routine? To learn more about these best practices and products and to make an appointment with your local Gentle Dental office call 1-888-513-7436.

Orthodontics Aren’t Just For Kids

Orthodontics use to be thought of as a procedure performed on kids and adolescents, but with the help of technology and special financing options, many adults are taking advantage of getting their smile back using orthodontics. No more do you need to have a mouth full of metal braces to have a great smile and to get those teeth straightened.

Orthodontic bracesLet us introduce you to Invisalign braces, a newer teeth-straightening system. Invisalign is a virtually invisible way of straightening your teeth without using traditional metal braces. The system involves teeth aligners that are made from clear plastic, and can be removed while eating, drinking and brushing your teeth.

Invisalign is performed on patients of all ages at six Gentle Dental state-of-the-art facilities throughout the tri-county area. Better yet, Gentle Dental offers various financing options to give patients of all financial situations a chance to get the smile they always wanted. The Facts About Thumb Sucking

Thumb sucking is a common habit among many children. It is common with children under two and is associated with the need to seek food.  In some infants it can signal fatigue, sleep, hunger, teething and shyness. Thirty percent of preschool children continue the habit. Most kids out grow it by 5.  It is not harmful unless the child is still doing it at the time their permanent teeth are coming in, which usually appears around the age of 6. It can be harmful because at that age the child’s permanent teeth alignment start to come in and thumb sucking can cause changes to the roof of the mouth.

thumb suckingThe intensity of the sucking is a factor that determines whether or not dental problems may result. If children rest their thumbs passively in their mouths, they are less likely to have difficulty than those who vigorously suck their thumbs. Some aggressive thumb suckers may cause problems with their baby (primary) teeth. Pacifiers can also affect the teeth essentially the same ways as sucking fingers and thumbs. However, it is often an easier habit to break.

Some possible effects of thumb sucking for children include problems chewing & talking, reshaping of the jaw bone, an overbite to occur and tonsils to collapse which can cause snoring. For more information on how to help stop your child from sucking their thumbs and fingers call your pediatric Gentle Dental dentist immediately at 1-888-513-7436 before it leads to further problems.

Dental Bridges Close The Gap

If you’re missing one or more teeth, you may notice a difference in chewing and speaking. One way to fix that problem is with a dental bridge. Bridges help maintain the shape of your face, as well as alleviating the stress in your bite by replacing missing teeth. dental bridge

Sometimes called a fixed partial denture, a bridge replaces missing teeth with artificial teeth that  literally bridges the gap where one or more teeth may have been. The restoration can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain or a combination of these materials and is bonded onto surrounding teeth for support. Unlike a removable bridge, which you can take out and clean, a fixed bridge can only be removed by a Gentle Dental Dentist.

A bridge attaches artificial teeth directly to the jaw or under the gum tissue. Depending on which type of bridge your dentist recommends, its success depends on its foundation. So it’s very important to keep your remaining teeth healthy and strong with regular teeth brushing, cleanings and dental checkups.

You don’t have to look like a jack o’lantern if you lost some teeth. Call your Gentle Dental dentist today at 1-888-513-7436 and learn how to restore that healthy good-looking smile with a dental bridge!

Jaws Popping & Clicking

Jaw PainDoes your jaw pop or click? Do you have difficulty when moving your mouth?  If the answer is yes to either of these questions then you may have a type of jaw pain called Temporomandibular Disorder (TMJ).  TMJ can result in pain in the face, neck, jaw and shoulder area when eating, talking or opening the mouth. Chewing can be difficult and there can be swelling on one side of the face.

There are several ways that jaw pain, clicking, popping and TMJ can occur including:

  • Bruxism (Teeth Grinding) – when a person grinds their teeth while sleeping, or clenches   the jaw tightly, the jaw muscles can be pulled. This can lead to the clicking and popping sound and can lead to TMJ.
  • Gum Chewing – constantly chewing gum or chewing tough foods such as hard taffy can also stretch the jaw muscles resulting in clicking jaws when eating or talking.
  • Stress – when a person is stressed they often times tighten their jaw and facial muscles
which can result in tightened jaws and stressed muscles.

Treatment depends on an accurate diagnosis being made by your experienced Gentle Dental dentist. Treatment can be as simple as a bite appliance or as serious as restorative or orthodontic treatments. But definitely don’t wait.  If you have any type of jaw pain, including popping or clicking noises make an appointment with your local Gentle Dental office by calling 1-888-513-7436.
