How To Get Rid Of That Annoying Plaque!

Plaque, the annoying word everyone hates when they think of their teeth and constantly having to maintain it. Plaque is the major culprit for gum disease, which later on can lead to permanent tooth loss. Besides visiting your Gentle Dental dentist twice a year for cleanings,  plaque can become like pesky fly and almost never go away. Here are a few ways to fight back and destroy plaque on your teeth that can cause so many problems:

Use a Good Toothpaste – and make sure to use it every day, twice! Certain toothpastes contain abrasive ingredients which can help scrubbing away plaque deposits from the teeth. plaque

Use Dental Floss – Plaque is not sticking only on the back or front side of your teeth, but plaque forms easily in between the teeth. Make sure to use the floss after brushing your teeth, in order to eliminate the harmful formations.

Use Xylitol – This antibacterial sugar – alcohol sweetener is a common ingredient in many chewing gums and mouthwashes. Xylitol is a very powerful ingredient that is able to fight plaque.

Use An Electric or Sonic Toothbrush – These toothbrushes are much more powerful and can get in areas manual toothbrushes can’t when it comes to removing plaque.

Using one or more of these methods will definitely help in defeating the annoying “plaque attack” that is constantly occurring in our mouths everyday after we eat. If we follow these methods, we should be able to keep and save our pearly whites for years to come. For more information on plaque formation, other techniques to try and to make an appointment for a checkup or cleaning call your local Gentle Dental office at 1-888-513-7436.

Toothpaste Spotlight – Tom’s Of Maine

Since 70 Tom’s of Maine has been manufacturing and distributing oral health products including toothpaste, floss and mouth rinse. The thing that makes Tom’s different is that all of their products are organic. Tom’s products contain no artificial ingredients, are not tested on animals, and are packaged in recycled materials.

In 95, after a seven-year effort, Tom’s became the first natural toothpaste to win the approval of the American Dental Association (ADA), allowing it to put that organization’s seal on its products. This was a crucial endorsement, as all of the company’s major competitors had long sported the ADA seal, which served to assure consumers that their products were effective. The three most popular flavors, spearmint, cinnamon and fennel, were approved first, and the company continued to seek ADA certification for the rest of its fluoride line. Toms Of Maine

The Tom’s of Maine line of organic toothpaste products contains thirteen different types of toothpaste. While a few of the pastes focus on general mouth health, there are other pastes that have been created for specific mouth related issues. One Tom’s of Maine toothpaste is the Anti-plaque Propolis and Myrrh toothpaste created without fluoride to promote healthy teeth and gums while fighting plaque. They also have developed a toothpaste for sensitive teeth and gums called Sensitive CareSLS-free. The Sensitive Care paste uses a purified form of licorice root as an alternative SLS, which is an ingredient in non organic toothpastes that can sometimes cause more sensitivity when used over an extended period of time. They also have an organic, all natural toothpaste that does contain fluoride.

The ADA Seal Of Acceptance

For more than 125 years, the American Dental Association (ADA) has been evaluating dental products for safety and effectiveness. The ADA Seal of Acceptance, which is a registered certification mark, is awarded after a product is tested and meets ADA guidelines and standards. It helps consumers make informed decisions about dental products.

There are more than 300 dental products with the ADA Seal of Acceptance that are sold to consumers. Products that display the Seal include floss, mouth rinse, toothpaste, manual and electric toothbrushes, tooth whitening bleaches, denture products and sugar-free chewing gum that reduces cavities.

adaWhile the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates oral care products and clears the products to be marketed directly to consumers, the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs objectively examines the safety and effectiveness. The council is an independent body of scientific experts, consisting of more than 125 consultants. Dental material experts, microbiologists, pharmacologists, toxicologists and chemists review and decide if a product is worthy of the ADA Seal. Products are evaluated on their safety, efficacy, composition, labeling, package inserts, advertising and other promotional materials.

Although the ADA program is strictly voluntary, manufactures submit their products for evaluation because they know that seven out of ten consumers recognize the ADA Seal and The Seal assures consumers that the product has been tested, the manufacture’s claims are true and the product produces the intended result.

The Facts About Plaque

Posted on: No Comments

Plaque is a very common term used on toothpaste and at the dentist, but what exactly is plaque? Plaque is the soft, yellow-white material found on teeth and gums. While in its soft state, a person can clean it off with a toothbrush and floss. Once the plaque has calcified (or hardened) into calculus (commonly known as tartar), a dentist or dental hygienist must remove it during a thorough professional cleaning. plaque

Plaque is actually composed of several species of bacteria and can lead to several different dental diseases including tooth decay, gingivitis and periodontitis.  The bacteria from undigested food  secrets acid on your teeth and gums. This acid dissolves in the tooth structure and eventually causes a cavity.

The main weapons against plaque and plaque formation are the toothbrush, floss and other oral hygiene aids such as  toothpicks.  The manual or mechanical break-up and removal of the plaque on a daily basis is required to prevent tooth decay and gum diseases. Chemicals in toothpaste and mouth rinses can also aid in this battle but are no substitute for the manual or mechanical removal of plaque.

Sometimes tooth brushing, toothpaste, floss and toothpicks aren’t enough to remove plaque.  That is where Gentle Dental can help! Our dentists and hygienists provide professional teeth cleanings and checkups to keep your teeth not only pearly white but helping  in preventing oral diseases including gum disease. To make an appointment for a cleaning and a checkup call 1-888-513-7436.

Fluoride Strengthens Teeth

Posted on:

Fluoride is a naturally occurring element that strengthens teeth. In doing this, it can help to prevent tooth decay.  Some foods, such as meat, fish, eggs and tea, contain fluoride. It is also found naturally in small amounts of water sources. Many toothpastes, rinses and professional treatments also contain fluoride. A lack of fluoride can cause a person to lose their teeth.

Sometimes a person needs a higher level of fluoride for their teeth to help prevent decay. A dentist can apply fluoride to your teeth as a gel, foam, or varnish. These types of  treatments contain a much higher level of fluoride than the amount found in toothpastes and mouth rinses. Varnishes are painted on the teeth, foams are put into a mouth guard, which is applied to the teeth for 1 to 4 minutes and gels can be painted on or applied via a mouth guard.

Dentists at Gentle Dental can give effective fluoride treatments to help strengthen the outer layer or enamel of your teeth and help fight cavities. These treatments make dental work including cleanings last longer and can help to prevent tooth decay. Make an appointment today at your local Gentle Dental by calling 1-888-513-7436.
